The Spectator’s View: Housing strategy died in the name of ideology

Bill C-400 is dead. It’s not surprising that the NDP-sponsored bill calling for a National Housing Strategy was defeated by the Conservative majority. Private member bills hardly ever get past second reading. And one backed by the NDP probably never had a chance with the Harper government.

A National Conversation on Housing has Begun

Last night, after much effort and support, Bill C-400 for a national housing strategy was defeated by a vote of 153 to 129.  To read the hansard from last night and see which MPs voted in favour click here.

The TRUTH about Bill C-400

On behalf of the Conservative government, Tony Clement has spoken out against C-400 calling it a “dangerous new NDP spending scheme” for more social housing.

This is a completely false characterization of Bill C-400.

Let’s be very clear:

1)      Bill C-400 is NOT a money bill.

Open Letter to MPs: Let's End Homelessness

Open Letter to Canada’s Members of Parliament,

This Wednesday, February 27th, Bill-C400, which calls for federal leadership in developing a national housing strategy, will be voted on at second reading.  If passed, the bill will be sent to committee for all-party review, debate and discussion.  If it is defeated, Canada will remain one of the only developed countries in the world without a national commitment or strategy to address homelessness and inadequate housing.

Canada Needs a National Housing Strategy

Thousands of people visibly and invisibly homeless, millions more housing insecure and housing affordability is dropping; Canada is in the midst of a housing crisis.  Various programs and policies are in place across the country, but what is missing is a coordinated approach to housing with strong leadership, adequate funds, and complaints and accountability mechanisms.  What is needed is a national strategy.
